Education and Scholarships
CILA works
closely with universities, colleges and other training organizations to enhance
both employer’s and worker’s needs pertaining to education and training
The CILA is a strong
supporter of the University of Northern B.C., the College of New Caledonia
and other regional education and training institutions. The CILA works with many educational institutions and industry and professional associations to promote educational advancement of forestry students and trades personnel in the north. The CILA
liaises with regional colleges and training institutions to encourage students
to attain the specialized skills needed for a rewarding and dynamic career in
the forest sector. The CILA directly supports students by providing a bursary at the university and a scholarship at CNC.
Logger Worker Training Needs Committee
The CILA is an active
participant of the Logger Worker Training Needs Committee (LWTNC), working closely
with the other three logging associations (Interior, North West and Truck Loggers Associations),
the BC Forest Safety Council and United Steelworkers. The LWTNC is funded
through a labour market agreement with the participants and Service Canada. The
purpose of the LWTNC is to implement strategies and programs to meet both the
needs of employers in recruiting new workers and retaining their existing
workforces, and, to help address the challenges faced by new workers in acquiring
needed highly-skilled training for today’s technology-based harvesting sector.
This will ensure that the harvesting sector is successful in maintaining and
advancing its recognized world class, competitive advantage into the future.
Logging Equipment Operator Training
The LWTNC, with funding
provided by the Industry Training Authority of B.C. and in partnership with the
B.C. Heavy Equipment Operators and Road Builders Association, is developing a training curriculum for feller buncher,
rubber tire and grapple skidder, dangle-head processor and loader operators.
This will help employers attract newly trained forest workers with up-to-date
fundamental operating skills and basic equipment knowledge required to get a
head start in today’s highly mechanized sector.
Forest Workers Human Resources Toolkit
The LWTNC has also developed
a Forest Workers Human Resources Toolkit
designed specifically for small to medium sized business operating in the
harvest sector to assist members for recruiting the right people with the right
skills at the right time. The guide provides up-to-date best practices on
recruitment pay and benefits, terms of conditions of employment, managing
employees, safety, employee resignation, termination and retirement. A brochure
summarizes what is contained in the toolkit.
